In her debut exhibition at Salon 94 Bowery, Betty Woodman presents her monumental “Roman Fresco / Places and Pleasures” originally created for and exhibited at the American Academy in Rome, Italy in 2010. This work is her “summa” following a lengthy response to and interaction with classical art. For over 50 years Betty has lived and worked part of each year in Italy. The classical tradition is as fundamental to her work as Islamic decoration was to Matisse. For the past 10 years she has found inspiration in the dialogue between architecture and painting in Roman art, and in the importance of architecture as a subject for painting. In this work Betty has investigated the strategies of hierarchy in Roman painting, a world of squares within rectangles, borders and friezes that yield paintings within paintings. She does not imitate appearances but constructs within the logic of classicism. Complex subject matter was an easy reach for Roman artists since a few narratives were repeated endlessly. It is simpler yet for Woodman. The vase image is for her the perfect subject for sculpture, as well as for painting. But the character and expressiveness of the vase is, in her hands, vast in range, comic, seductive, solemn, witty with the odd fact that it always remains only and always a vase. Woodman’s work was the subject of a major retrospective at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2006. It is in the collections of over 50 museums. Her one-person exhibitions include the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; the Gulbenkian Museum, Lisbon; and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris among many others. Woodman has been the recipient of honorary doctorate degrees from the Rhode Island School of Design, the Nova Scotia College of Art and the University of Colorado. She lives with her husband, George Woodman, dividing the year between studios in New York City and Antella, Italy.

David Goldblatt has been photographing and documenting South African society for over 50 years. Born in Randfontein in 1930 to parents who came to South Africa to escape the persecution of Lithuanian Jews in 1890, he was simultaneously part of privileged white society and a victim of religious persecution and alienation. Motivated by his contradictory position in South African society, Goldblatt began photographing this society, and in 1963 decided to devote all of this time to photography.

Goldblatt focuses on critical explorations of South African society. While he uses photography as a means of accessing and exploring people and societies, David Goldblatt is acutely aware of the ethics of photography, and has used the camera as a way of capturing the complexities and intricacies of the specific conditions and situations that he photographs. His photographs are neither propaganda nor violently provocative, but rather become far more complex, meditative documents that are open to interpretation and that permeate far more deeply, and for longer than the initial shock and violence associated with documentary and news photography.

This body of work was made in Kyoto, by the banks of the Kamo river. It comprises a series of images of couples of all ages and backgrounds, sitting by the river- talking, courting, taking lunch, or simply watching the river flow together. Historically, the Kamo river has been the location for such activity for many, many years.

In northern Italy you will find the shadow-village Viganella. From november till February, for 83 days long, the village is completely in the shadow of the surrounding mountains. Since december 2006 there is a mirror on top of the mountain, 870 meters above the village. This motorized mirror of 8 x 5 meters moves along with the sun and reflects the sunlight into the village. The idea of the mirror is initiated by the previous mayor of Viganella, Pierfranco Midali. Completed in cooperation with the architect Giacomo Bonzani and the engineer Emilio Barlocco.

Edoardo Gellner, a leading figure in the international world of Architecture, was born in Abbazia (now Opatija, Rijeka) on 20th January, 1909. In the 30s he worked as interior designer in Trieste and Rijeka, then moved to Venice where he graduated in 1945. Post war events and interesting job opportunities led him to Cortina d’Ampezzo and in the 50s he became internationally famous for some controversial works planned for 1956 Olympic Cortina and Corte di Cadore. The Corte Residential Village was specially designed for the then ENI President, Enrico Mattei, who also entrusted Gellner with the project of a whole corporate town by the Agip plants in Gela. Among Gellner’s most interesting works is the church named after Nostra Signora del Cadore, planned in cooperation with Carlo Scarpa. Gellner mainly devoted his long career to town and landscape planning and wrote many essays on traditional rural architecture in the mountain environment.
